[Laredo, TX, May 2024] — This year with help from St. Augustine High School, International Bank of Commerce, Rotarians and friends of Rotary, Laredo Next Generation Rotary continued one of its longest running service projects “No Piesitos Left Behind”. For over 10 years, Next Generation Rotarians have donated shoes and socks to at risk children. This annual project is held in conjunction with a local elementary school selected by the club.
Next Generation Rotary selected Senator Judith Zaffirini Elementary School and worked closely with the school’s counselor who provided shoe sizes for 80 children. On Friday May 16, 2024 all 80 children were surprised with a goody bag that contained a pair of shoes, socks and snacks. One of them opened his bag, found a new pair of Sketchers, immediately switched out his shoes and stated “I’ve never had these kind of shoes” while another said “These are my dream shoes”. Rotarian Ricardo Casanova said “I’m happy to have been a part of all of it” while Rotarian Nidia Garcia added this is a “Reminder to always count our blessings”.
Rotary members from Next Generation Rotary have long supported the community through a range of service projects. This year, members of Next Generation Rotary have donated books to the El Cenizo Library, donated feminine products and clothing to Casa Misericordia and have raised funds for Smiles from Heaven.
